Things to do

FISHING AND HUNTING. Fishing boga, catfish, dorado, shad, and pejerrey in the immense artificial lake in Río Hondo (33,000 Ha), in Los Quiroga and Figueroa reservoirs, and in the Dulce and Salado rivers. Hare, vizcacha, ducks, and partridge hunting.

QUECHUA TRADITION AND RELIGIOUS FESTIVITIES. The following festivities are worth visiting: Fiesta Nacional de la Chacarera, Festival de la Salamanca in La Banda; Fiesta Nacional del Canasto and Encuentros Corales de Invierno in Termas de Río Hondo; carnivals in Santiago and Termas de Río Hondo, festivities in homage to the Señor de los Milagros de Mailín, in Villa Mailín and to San Esteban, in Sumamao.

Places to visit

SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO, THE OLDEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY. It was founded in 1553. Its cathedral was the first one built in Argentina. In the church of La Merced, the faithful venerate the statute of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes. In this city, the Franciscan monks who arrived in America founded the Convento de San Francisco, one of the first convents, which houses a religious art museum and the Cloister Cell of San Francisco Solano. The church of Santo Domingo has one of the two existing tracings of the Sacred Shroud. Other places of interest are the Provincial History Museum and the Anthropology Museum. In Parque Aguirre there is a zoo with important local species, a vivarium and an artificial lake.

TERMAS DE RÍO HONDO - AN OASIS.
Winter is the ideal time to pay a visit to the several thermal spas. Due to their temperature, you can bathe in the outdoor pools. The so-called "Aguas del Sol" are recommended for rheumatism and stress.

Other places of interest: Villa La Punta on the Sierra de Guasayán with panoramic views of mountains and gorges. Ojo de Agua and Sumampa with their mountains, streams, flowing waters, natural vegetation and an ideal climate. Sumampa is an important place of pilgrimage, where the faithful gather to worship Nuestra Señora de la Consolación.

 


Shopping

Leather goods, woven cloth, basketwork, pottery, and musical instruments like the famous "bombo legüero".
There is an important arts and crafts and spice fair in Termas de Río Hondo.
